Salford is a city in Greater Manchester, England, situated immediately west of Manchester city centre. Historically part of Lancashire, it grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as an important centre for textile manufacturing, engineering and trade. The Manchester Ship Canal, opened in 1894, helped transform Salford Docks into one of Britain’s busiest inland ports.
Following industrial decline during the twentieth century, Salford experienced significant regeneration. The former docklands are now home to MediaCity, a major creative and digital hub that houses organisations such as the BBC and ITV. Nearby attractions include The Lowry arts centre, the Imperial War Museum North and the regenerated waterfront at Salford Quays.
