Telford

Telford is a large town in Shropshire, West Midlands, created during the 1960s and 1970s as a planned new town. Named after the civil engineer Thomas Telford, it brought together several older industrial communities and villages, including Wellington, Madeley and Dawley. The town has modern shopping, business and residential districts, supported by good road and rail connections. Telford lies close to Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised as one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. The famous Iron Bridge, completed in 1779, symbolises the area’s pioneering role in iron production and engineering. Other local attractions include museums, parks and the extensive Telford Town Park. Today, Telford is an important centre for employment, manufacturing, technology and services within Shropshire.
