Chester is a historic cathedral city in Cheshire, close to the English–Welsh border. Founded by the Romans as the fortress of Deva Victrix, it retains some of Britain’s most impressive Roman remains, including sections of its amphitheatre and defensive walls. The city is especially known for its Rows—distinctive two-level shopping galleries housed within medieval and Victorian buildings. Other landmarks include Chester Cathedral, the Eastgate Clock and the largely complete city walls. The River Dee runs beside the centre, providing attractive walks and boat trips. Chester remains a popular visitor destination, combining archaeological heritage with shops, restaurants and cultural attractions. Nearby Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best-known zoological gardens, also draws large numbers of visitors to the area.
